New Faith throws out the Ten Commandments

8:00amThe Uniting Church in its Constitution and Basis of Union documents still affirms that it believes in the creeds; that it is part of the catholic and apostolic church; that it proclaims the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ; and submits to Christ as Lord. No doubt Macnab's ordination vows, taken many years ago, included such commitments, as did his baptismal vows. When a minister walks away from their vows, taken before God, they should simply acknowledge this and resign their position. If an honest cobbler no longer believes in shoes, he should take down his shingle and take up another profession. Honestly, St Michael's congregation should style itself, not 'Christian', but 'post-Christian'. It should also leave the Uniting Church - as it can no longer confess the catholic and apostolic church faith - and hand back its property to others who can use it for its intended purpose.
These suggestions have NOTHING to do with whether Macnab and his congregation are right in their beliefs. Even a rabid atheist should know that calling yourself a Christian whilst disavowing and even fighting against core Christian doctrines is a bad look Far from being bold, courageous, liberal and progressive, it just looks tacky. It does not reflect a 'positive view of life' to act in this way. -

7:50amEnlightenment in one of the church systems!! I thought it could never happen in my lifetime. so much of the bible should be ripped out and burned, the criminal indoctrination of countless childrens\' minds with god and sin dogma has ruined millions of otherwise clear thinking reasoning people. It\'s past time for a new reformation. -

11:45pmHow can this be? A priest that says that the Ten Commandments are wrong? Surely he must be wrong. First he says that there are unbelievable passages in the New Testament. Now he says that the Ten Commandments are rubbish! Has he taken his red-ink-biro and like a school teacher crossed it all out as being wrong? Surely he must be wrong. He is not God! Who does he think he is?
I mean, I thought I had my place in heaven reserved. I thought that when I died, St Peter would welcome me at the gate. Isn't that why Jesus died on the cross for me. So that I could be good, and then when I died, I would say "Hi" to Pete, and he would look me up on his Microsoft Windows Computer (or does he have a Mac--heck I don't know which sort of computer St Pete would have, or is it a book that he has?)
Anyway, so St Pete would look me up and then I would go, straight into Heaven. That's what I thought.
But this man now says there are no Commandments! So does that mean that Pete doesn't check up on us anymore? Does everyone get through those gates?? Is heaven going to be as crowded as the Qantas Club on a Friday afternoon? You mean I might have to fight in the queues for food forever?
Or is it that if this priest is right there is no Heaven? You mean, that I have been good all this time, and there is no payoff in the end? You mean that I missed out on all those pleasure for nothing?
Are you saying I am a fool?
No it must be him! He must be wrong!! If only we had crosses, then maybe we could nail him to one! He would die and then in his dying we might be freed. (Hang on, isn't that..... -

9:35pmI attended St Michael's for a few weeks with a friend and I was shocked (to say the least) that this man has reached a position of authority with such little "heart knowledge" of the ways of the Lord.
Some may be able to "package" Christianity into a box and stack it on the shelf alongside other religions without fully understanding that it is more than just head knowledge, but you wouldn't expect that from of pastor.
Macnab: a victim of intellectualism - you bet! -

9:28pm"While there is still breath, hope remains"
I cling to the hope that Macnab will turn from his dark ways before the end. -

9:23pmIf Macnab thinks that the "old faith" is dead and in desperate need of restoration, he obviously been out visiting other churches recently.
I would encourage Macnab to look to other Christian denominations before jumping overboard into a vacuum of faithlessness. -

9:17pmI can't really see the point in being a church leader if you are going to detract from the church's fundamental role!
I am with you Dennis - this bloke seems a bit too odd for my liking. -

9:14pmHello again, John Abbate 19th September, 2008 12:52pm
Exactly, as you stated, I believe that Macnab is "being deceitful".
My disapproval of Macnab's actions does not mean that my love for Macnab as a person is any less, nor has it been made conditional. I believe that Jesus died for Macnab (and all whom we would consider "bad" for that matter) in the same portion that He died for myself, yourself, my family, your family. In God's sight are we not all sinners (Romans 3:23); and yet He loves us unconditionally!
“Being deceitful" implies an action or behaviour. Thus, as I was saying previously, God calls on us to love each other (the person), as distinct from their actions or behaviours. Otherwise, what disciplinary authority would a parent have over their child?
Moving on to your other area of reference, it is the application of the Bible today in my life that confirms to me – and most Christians – that it is inspired by God in its entirety. I do not doubt that there were other ‘religious’ texts under consideration in early AD, but were they necessary? Only God really knows the answer to that question. Most Christians believe that God inspired both the textual writing and construction of the Bible.
I hope this helps John. -

12:52pmDennis, thank you for the correction. I of course meant that Revelation is the strangest book in the New Testament, not the Gospels.
On the alleged misquote, I was not quoting you directly so much as drawing the clear inference from your (and others') remarks. Deceit and lies are not here or ever simply "presented to mankind" in the absence of a deceiving, lying agent, and in the context of this discussion that agent is clearly identified as Francis Macnab. Besides which, your stated hope that "one day Macnab turns from his deceitful ways" directly infers that Macnab is being deceitful, does it not? Of course I am ruling out the possibility that Macnab is demonically possessed and has become the unwilling mouthpiece of Satan.
I have not actually read or watched The Da Vinci Code so I'm not sure where I was alluding to it. I was wishing to point out the fact that there were many texts written, read and distributed among the early Christian communities, and many of these communities adhered to their own list of accepted texts. It wasn't until the mid-fourth century that a canon began to emerge that would come to be known as the New and Old Testaments. The adding and subtracting continued for centuries, and although the list of texts that make up the Bible is stable today, there is no reason to suspect it will remain so indefinitely. - Showing comments 61-70 of 106
