St Michael's Church - Music

Music has an important role to play in the functioning of society and has had for many thousands of years. No human culture appears to be without music. Singing, in particular, seems to be universal. Music is invariably expressed in relation to religion. The music program at St Michael's for 2008 will bring us some of the best musicians and music that Australia has to offer to enrich our experience during our Sunday services at special events during the year.
Choral Singing at St Michael's
During 2007 following the appointment of our new organist and manager of music, Rhys Boak, a small professional ensemble of singers was formed to sing during special services. This ensemble, known as The St Michael's Singers, features members will again sing at special services during 2008 including the Good Friday service and during the lead up to Christmas.
During 2008 a variety of choirs will visit St Michael's during Sunday services including the Eltham East Primary School Choir, the Berwick Youth Choir, the Exhaudi Youth Choir and others.
Instrumental music at St Michael's
As has been the tradition at St Michael's, a wide variety of musicians will perform for us during our Sunday services. During the selection process for guest artists in 2008, even greater attention has been paid to sourcing the highest quality performers from a wide variety of fields.
Keyboardists who will visit St Michaels during 2008 include pianists Geoffrey Tozer, Amir Farid and Sonya Lifschitz, as well as harpsichordist Elizabeth Anderson and talented young piano virtuosi. Also to visit St Michael's will be some of Australia's finest singers including Roxanne Hislop and Rosamund Illing.
Please check your orders of service each week to see who will be performing the following Sunday and on "This Weeks Address". Brochures will also be available from the rear of the church or from the office.
Thursday lunchtime recitals
Every Thursday at 1.00pm, the St Michael's Carillon is sounded and the grand organ comes to life for a free 30 minute recital. So far these recitals have been well attended by the public. A variety of organists will play during 2008, including our own organist, Rhys Boak and his wife Ryoko Mori.
